Sao Miguel is often the starting point for exploring the archipelago of the Azores. Visitors are captivated by its lush prairies, forests, and hydranga flowers. Covering 747 sq. km and home to 135,000 residents, Sao Miguel is the largest and most populated island, earning the name ”the green island” for its fertility. It is the economic and political hub, with Ponta Delgada as the capital, housing the region´s main port, university, and international airport.

Of volcanic origin, Sao Miguel features mountain ranges up to 1100 m of altitude, craters like Sete Cidades, and ongoing volcanic activity, visible in hot springs and steaming fumeroles. The island has experienced multiple volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, with the worst in 1522. Today, agriculture, cattle breeding, and tourism dominate, with crops like corn, pineapples, and tobacco.

With the following pictures we take you along on our three days land cruising to the natural wonders of the island.
