Our last trip to Whangarei takes us along the Hatea River, right to the Town Basin. Our timing to arrive at high tide with the current still running upriver is perfect.

Along the way the new modern Hatea River Bridge needs to be informed about our arrival time half an hour in advance on weekends. The 265m-long, 17m-wide tidal river estuary crossing has a 25m-wide lifting section to allow vessels taller than 7.5m to transit the bridge. The bridge manager stops the traffic on the bridge in order to open the bascule section up for us. After SuAn has passed it closes again and the meanwhile waiting cars can continue.
