After a great sailing day we arrive shortly before sunset at Great Barrier Island. When we started our circumnavigation of New Zealand in November last year we stopped only for one night in that beautiful island. This time we want to stay for a while to explore the island on foot and enjoy its nature.

This green island is the sixth biggest island of New Zealand, has an area of 285 square kilometers and a population of 930. During the warmer months it is a very popular holiday and cruising destination for the Aucklanders. Hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails provide enough opportunities to explore the hilly island on foot. Mt. Hobson is 621 meters high. Many bays provide good anchorages, some of them have little beaches.

Port Fitzroy is a big natural harbor, protected from the ocean swell by Kaikoura Island. There in Kiwiriki Bay, one of its side bays we drop anchor and want to stay until next week, when the forecast storm will be over.
