Borneo - Cocos Keeling
The 1600 nautical mile-long stage takes us from the northern part of Borneo in Malaysia, along the west coast of Borneo, through the Sunda Strait located between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, into the Indian Ocean. There, the Australian territory of Cocos Keeling Atoll becomes our first destination on our way to South Africa.
The first part of the journey, almost up to the Sunda Strait, is quite challenging, especially for Yanmar San, as we sail directly against the prevailing winds, making actual sailing nearly impossible. It´s only after leaving the island of Borneo behind that we can sail close-hauled towards the Sunda Strait. Then, we finally catch the trade winds, which allow us to sail on a broad reach for the remaining 650 nautical miles to Cocos Keeling.
