Sailing through the Islands Orkneys and Shetlands

With the Outer Hebrides now astern, the next stage of our voyage around Scotland takes us to the country's northern island groups: Orkney and Shetland.

The Orkney Islands, lying just north of the Scottish mainland, consist of around 70 islands, of which about 20 are inhabited. They are home to approximately 22,000 people. Further to the northeast lie the Shetland Islands, an archipelago of more than 100 islands, with around 16 inhabited and a population of about 23,000.

For sailors, these waters are among the most demanding in the British Isles. Powerful tidal streams, reaching speeds of up to 8 knots in places, narrow channels, tide races and overfalls require careful passage planning and precise timing. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and strong Atlantic winds often combine with the tides to create steep, uncomfortable seas. Yet these navigational challenges will be rewarded with spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife and some of the most fascinating islands in northern Europe.
