Ireland – Part 2: Down the East Coas

Our circumnavigation of Ireland is not yet complete, even though we took a detour to Scotland.

Ahead of us lie about 300 nautical miles along Ireland’s eastern coastline, starting at Port Larne in Northern Ireland. Along the way, two major highlights await us: Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, and Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland.

The coastline features several shallow, lagoon-like inlets with strong tidal influences, that offer good anchoring opportunities, as well as plenty of marinas where we can find shelter from passing Atlantic storm systems. We’ll often have to wait for favorable winds, which will give us the chance to explore the surrounding areas on foot and take in the rich coastal scenery.
