The uninhabited island Attu is the most western island of the Aleutian Island chain. In the past a LORAN-Station was operated by the US Coast Guard. After the station was abandoned in 2010, there are no humans permanently staying on the island anymore.
The climate is typical for the Aleutian Islands. Dense cloud cover, rain and gale force winds are prevailing. There are only eight to ten sonny days on Attu per year.

Yachts find some suitable anchorages. They are in the Northeast (Chichagof Harbor) and Southeast (Massacre Bay). Since Uncle Erwin will bring us lots of North wind we have chosen the little Casco Cove, which is located on the east side of the Massacre Bay and offers a very good protection from northerly winds.

The name Massacre Bay goes back to big scale killing of Aleutian natives, the Unangan, committed by Russian fur hunters.

Attu is very mountainous with a long period of snow cover. There are no trees and no land-living mammals, except for rats which are introduced by humans. Those rats are a big danger for the rare birds which live on the island. There are some marine-mammals like whales, seals, sea lions and sea otters.
