From afar, we spot one of Larne’s most recognizable landmarks: the three iconic chimneys of the former Ballylumford Power Station. About 22 years ago, the old plant has been replaced by the modern “C” station, which, with a capacity of 693 megawatts, is the largest power station in Northern Ireland. It operates using a CCGT system (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine), where gas turbines and steam turbines work together. The hot exhaust gases from the gas turbines are cleverly reused to generate additional steam, allowing the plant to produce more energy with the same fuel and making it highly efficient.
After getting the permission from port control in Larne we enter the passage into the lagoon. Here a industrial port handles freighters, especially RoRo ships coming over from Great Britain. We are back in NORTH IRELAND (UK)
