Great Barrier Island is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. A highlight is the climb up to the island´s highest elevation, 627 m tall Mt. Hobson.

New Zealand´s Department of Conservation (DOC) has built some hiking tracks on the island and that one, up to Mt. Hobson, includes several swing bridges, board walks and endless seeming steps, all surrounded by nothing else then nature.

A wooden viewing platform on the summit provides a 360 degrees view over the island. Port Fitzroy to our feet is the natural port of Great Barrier Island. Little Barrier Island in a little distance to the West does not have any protected anchorages. Clouds prevent the view over to Whangarei Heads, but many little islands are still visible. Also Coromandel Peninsula, as part of New Zealand´s North Island can be seen further south.

Together with the crew of SV Rebell we enjoy the great walk in sunny weather and the spectacular view over the islands around us.
