Eastport is an important wood loading port and our little marina is part of it in the inner harbor of the river Turanganui. A huge freighter at the pier in the river mouth is getting loaded with thousands of trunks. Big trucks arrive frequently with new freshly cut wood to be stored in the port and exported.
Maoris arrived in this area many years ago in their Wakas. Those are canoe-catamarans with sails. Tairawhiti is a duplicate of such and ancient Waka and takes guests to cultural and sailing experience trips out in the Poverty Bay.
The bay got its name from Captain James Cook who arrived here on 9.October 1769 with his Endeavour. At that time there were no stores for trading, which made him thinking of that name. Several sculptures of James Cook are decorating a nice board walk along the river Turanganui and the long Kaiti beach.
